The place-name 'Duddington' is Anglo-Saxon but my surname 'Wyles' is probably Viking and linked to an unusual plural use of 'Jarl', 'Uarl' or 'Yarl' (modern English 'Earl' but nothing to do with Angle-ness) - meaning 'social status gained by a dominant fighter'. It should probably be spelt in the singular as something like 'Uuyle' ('Wyle') and is usually understood by knowledgeable Scots as the proper form of how 'Wallace' ('Uallas' or 'Uylles') should be spelt as it pre-dates the modern 'Wallace' and is far older than that version held by those who think they hold the ancient version and are 'exclusive' as regards clan membership. I was speaking to a compiler of an Oxford British name dictionary and he is the expert who pointed-out the unusual fact that 'Wyles' is oddly a 'plural' name. It might be that Viking-raiders from Scandinavia landed in Scotland and simultaneously down the Eastern side of Britain in their feared long-boats - bringing their DNA (which the Wyles men possess), their culture and their names - or, they migrated from Eastern Scotland down to Northampton, sailed up the River Welland and settled in Duddington - perhaps they are the reason a 'new' Church door was required in 1220 CE!
