Wiles-Wyles - Lincolnshire Wills (1601-1652)
& Bedfordshire Marriages (1741-1790)
By Adrian Chan-Wyles (PhD)
The following is important historical information for research purposes regarding the origination, evolution and spread of the ‘Wiles-Wyles’ surname in the Duddington and surrounding areas. Although not covering Duddington specifically, this data does give an insight into spelling, populations and possible migrations:
Lincolnshire is situated 45.1 miles north of Duddington
Huntingdonshire is situated 23.2 miles southeast of Duddington
Northamptonshire is situated 31.3 miles southwest of Duddington
Bedfordshire is situated 56.9 miles south of Duddington
Buckinghamshire is situated 80.3 miles south of Duddington
Although unusually no details concerning ‘Wiles’ or ‘Wyles’ was found in this data set for Northamptonshire, the following information was gathered for the entries covering the other areas. The omission of Duddington is probably due to the Parish Records for the 1600s being destroyed in a flood. I am attempting to remedy this ‘black-hole’ of information by researching the Hearth Tax of 1674 which covers Duddington specifically (stating that 70 families lived there at that time). These are the details available in this body of names and dates:
a) Muster to Arms (1522) - Buckinghamshire (1)
b) Wills (1601-1652) - Lincolnshire & Huntingdonshire (22)
c) Marriage Licenses (1741-1790) - Bedfordshire (11)
Buckinghamshire, Villa De Preston Cum Cowley – Certificate of Muster (1522)

Genealogical information of this type is usually ‘free’ to access in person at various libraries, museums, record depositories and research societies, etc. Many files are accessible (for ‘free’) through the National Archives, but the problem is that many people are not in a position to make personal visits to information centres, or possess the requisite computer skills to perform fruitful online searches. This is where a third-party tends to intercede and access the various records of interest, or the record-keepers themselves ‘charge’ a small fee to search for and extract the required information for individual seekers. In this instance, the information conveyed below belongs to ‘us’ - the British people – but was collected by Ancestry.com (who do not own a copyright in relation to this data), and ‘sold’ on to the general public. We are paying not for the ‘free’ data, but rather for the service this third-party has performed on our behalf. We are, in effect, paying for their ‘labour’ in this process. To assist other researchers in this matter, we are making this data yet again free to the general public whilst acknowledging its third-party source. Remember, with the right set of skills, and appropriate levels of free time, this data can be acquired entirely free of charge. Ancestry.com acquired this data from the following sources:
